Day at the Capitol – Topeka, KS
In the heart of Topeka, Kansas, The Whole Person, a non-profit organization committed to enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities, prepares to talk and educate about how important Centers for Independent Living are at the Capitol. Our responsibility is to advocate for the crucial funding that supports the success of Centers for Independent Living (CILs) across Kansas state.
As the sun rises over the Topeka Kansas Capitol, a dedicated team from The Whole Person gears up for a day filled with passion, purpose, and advocacy. The focus is to shed light on the importance of funding for CILs, which plays a role in promoting the CIL’s five core services.
At the forefront of their endeavors is Independent Living Skills Training, a service that empowers individuals with disabilities to develop the skills necessary for a self-sufficient and fulfilling life. Through DIY Life training, participants gain the confidence to navigate daily challenges and achieve greater independence.
Individual and Systems Advocacy takes center stage as The Whole Person advocates for policies that enhance the rights and opportunities of people with disabilities. This core service aims to create a more inclusive and accessible society, breaking down barriers that hinder the full participation of individuals with disabilities in their communities.
Information and Referral services bridge the gap between individuals and the multitude of resources available to them. The Whole Person is on a mission to ensure that every person with a disability has access to the information they need to make informed decisions about their lives.
Peer Support is a cornerstone of The Whole Person’s approach, fostering a sense of community among individuals with disabilities. Through shared experiences and mutual encouragement, participants build a support network that transcends the challenges they face.
Transition Services & Support marks a crucial phase in The Whole Person’s commitment to empowerment. This core service guides individuals with disabilities through major life transitions, such as moving from school to the workforce, ensuring a smooth and successful journey.
The significance of adequate funding cannot be overstated, as it serves as the lifeblood that enables The Whole Person to expand its reach and impact. By amplifying the voices of those who rely on CILs, The Whole Person advocates for a future where every person with a disability has the resources and support needed to live life to the fullest.
As The Whole Person stands united at the Capitol, they invite the community to join hands in championing the cause of independence and inclusion. Through this day of advocacy, they hope to inspire change, foster awareness, and secure the funding necessary to empower individuals with disabilities throughout Kansas and beyond. Today, at the Capitol in Topeka, the seeds of a more inclusive and accessible future are being sown, and with the support of the community, they are bound to flourish.
