This year, The Whole Person has started on a new project in our ongoing endeavor to provide resources to people with disabilities. In an effort to provide the community with issues that the disability community face, we have started producing a podcast named “The Whole Podcast KC.” The subjects will mostly focus on the disability community and the challenges that they may face. The “KC” in the title is for Kansas City, since The Whole Person resides there, but know that the topics might spread outside of our region. After all, there are people with disabilities across the entire globe.

Why a podcast?

So why a podcast? Our goal is to advocate for rights and equality for people with disabilities, and for that, we needed a way to spread the word. For those that do not know, a podcast is a form of media that lets listeners listen in on a talk-show of sorts. In recent years, podcasts have become quite popular to listen to on a drive and at home. A couple of friends I know would start up their car, attach their phone, and load up the newest podcasts to listen to. These forms of media tend to be more like conversations, rather than a lecture. It gives you the feeling that you, the audience member, might be able to discuss and explain your thoughts as well.

Multitude of Topics

Podcasts can be quite riveting and also addicting to listen to. But that ultimately depends on what topics are being discussed. For The Whole Podcast KC, we focus on topics affecting the disability community, as well as announce events that the community could be interested in. Oddly, popular sites with podcasts like Spotify or Apple Podcasts do not seem to contain many podcasts with topics of disability. This is strange considering how the term “disability” is rather broad. There are many topics to talk about in terms of disability, and we are going to go headstrong into them. This means that some of our subjects may feel thought-provoking, whereas other subjects may provide questions that would make individuals feel uncomfortable. If no one talks about these concerns, then people are not going to understand the troubles that the disability community face.

Incoming Guests

From time to time, we may introduce special guests to the podcast. These guests will usually be people within the disability community. Other guests may be staff members from The Whole Person. In these situations, we may learn about the hardships a person might have faced growing up, what events a support group could be hosting, or glean advocacy tips to fight for equality. Some individuals may have stories that will make you ponder how you view other people.

Conclusion

Be sure to listen in to The Whole Podcast KC on your favorite podcast app. Additionally, we will also be uploading our episodes to our YouTube channel for those that prefer a visual version. This is a chance to learn more about the disability community and what you can do to help.
